Shannon Sharpe is not any stranger to controversy, and not too long ago, he discovered himself defending his views on X after feedback concerning Caitlin Clark’s affect on the WNBA sparked debate.
Throughout an episode of First Take, he passionately argued that whereas Caitlin Clark deserves recognition, the contributions of legendary gamers like Maya Moore, Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie, Lauren Jackson, Diana Taurasi, and Simone Augustus shouldn’t be ignored.
“Followers and analysts have tried to attenuate Caitlin Clark, saying [I’m] ‘giving her all this credit score. What concerning the ladies that got here earlier than her?’” Sharpe acknowledged. “What the ladies that got here earlier than her, what they did can’t be taken away. His claims have been met with backlash from some customers who accused him of downplaying the struggles and achievements of ladies within the league previous to Clark’s rise.
One consumer responded to Sharpe’s feedback, saying his difficulty is that he “by no means speaks on the disrespect the remainder of the ladies of the W skilled.”
Sharpe fired again, saying, “That’s your difficulty not mine. I’ve no difficulty with something I’ve stated with reference to WNBA and its gamers previous or current.”
This response solely fueled the fireplace, as many followers expressed outrage at his dismissive tone. Sharpe additional escalated the scenario by questioning one consumer who was partaking along with his posts, saying, “Why are you one my web page? Don’t you’ve one other horse 2 rob of his hair? Cease attempting 2 kill my vibe.”
The dialog took one other flip when some customers advised that his feedback hinted at animosity in direction of Megan Thee Stallion, as evidenced by a profile image utilized by the consumer.
The backlash was intense, with folks accusing him of being anti-Black and debating whether or not he was really recognizing the contributions of all WNBA gamers.
Sharpe later revealed he would not reply to negativity on-line after Wednesday.
