Black billionaire ready to tackle HBCU student debt-again

In a daring effort to deal with one of the urgent financial challenges going through Black America, the Scholar Freedom Initiative (SFI)—based by billionaire businessman Robert F. Smith, Chairman and CEO of Vista Fairness Companions—has partnered with Dwell Nation City to launch HBCU AWARE FEST 2026.

This primary-of-its-kind cultural and academic motion will debut in Spring 2026 with a weeklong activation in Atlanta, led by Mayor Andre Dickens. The aim: elevate $100 million to assist college students at Traditionally Black Faculties and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Establishments, and Tribal Faculties and Universities.

The Weight of Scholar Debt on Black Futures

Black undergraduate college students carry a mean of $38,000 in pupil mortgage debt, a determine even larger for graduate college students. That burden results in delayed life milestones:

51% postpone household planning

This disaster threatens the upward mobility of Black communities and contributes to the rising racial wealth hole.

What Is HBCU AWARE FEST?

HBCU AWARE FEST 2026 is greater than an occasion—it’s a nationwide name to motion powered by music, schooling, and Black tradition. Hosted within the coronary heart of the Atlanta College Middle (AUC), residence to Spelman School, Morehouse School, Clark Atlanta College, and Morehouse College of Medication, the competition will embody:

Dwell concert events from main artists

Instructional workshops

Influence-driven panel discussions

Neighborhood organizing and outreach alternatives

Income from the competition will fund Scholar Freedom Mortgage Agreements, a extra equitable different to conventional federal Father or mother PLUS loans, in addition to holistic pupil assist providers like SFI’s HELPS program.

Mayor Andre Dickens added, “Our Administration’s North Star is to make Atlanta the most effective place within the nation to boost a household.
