Civil Rights Attorney Donates to First-Ever HBCU Hockey Program, Making History

In a historic transfer for each the world of hockey and Traditionally Black Schools and Universities (HBCUs), a outstanding civil rights legal professional has stepped ahead with a major donation to help the first-ever HBCU hockey program. This milestone marks a pivotal second in diversifying the game and offering new alternatives for Black student-athletes.

The donation, made by legal professional Ben Crump, will go in direction of funding scholarships, tools, and operational prices for the newly established hockey program at Tennessee State College (TSU). With hockey historically being a sport dominated by predominantly white establishments, this initiative goals to interrupt boundaries and enhance illustration of Black athletes on the ice.

“That is about extra than simply hockey,” stated civil rights legal professional Ben Crump. “That is about creating alternatives, increasing the tradition, and exhibiting that Black athletes belong in each house.”

TSU introduced plans for the hockey program in June 2023 to advertise range and inclusion throughout the sport. The initiative started as a club-level crew with aspirations to realize NCAA Division I standing. By April 2024, the HBCU had appointed Duanté Abercrombie because the inaugural head coach. Marking a major step ahead for this system. The crew is ready to begin its first season in 2025.

The primary-ever HBCU hockey program is a groundbreaking effort to deliver inclusivity to a sport that has traditionally lacked range. The influence of this donation is not going to solely profit student-athletes however may also encourage a brand new technology of younger Black hockey gamers who could have by no means envisioned themselves on the ice.
