Director RaMell Ross, whose movie Nickel Boys arrives in theaters on December 13, is basking within the glow of the film’s recognition by the African American Movie Critics Affiliation (AAFCA). The nonprofit, which introduced its honorees for the 2025 Particular Achievement Awards final week, has awarded Nickel Boys the Karen & Stanley Kramer Social Justice Award. Ross can be receiving the Highlight Award from the sixteenth Annual AAFCA Awards.
Impressed by Colson Whitehead’s fictionalized account of the Arthur G. Dozier Faculty for Boys, a Florida reform faculty infamous for its century-long historical past of abuse, Ross’s searing drama retells the harrowing tales of younger males subjected to beatings, rape, torture and homicide.
“I’ve at all times admired the members of AAFCA and their advocacy and enthusiasm for cinema,” Ross advised EBONY. “I’m a child that grew up on army bases who had their first profession in sports activities with early ambitions for a job within the authorities. It is extremely surreal!”
With few figuring out about this tragic expertise for a lot of younger males within the twentieth century, Ross felt compelled to deliver Whitehead’s phrase to the display screen. “Colson is a residing legend, and his novel The Nickel Boys counteracted the tried erasure of Florida’s Dozier Faculty Boys,” he declared. “To signify his iconic characters and provides them a poetic life was a possibility too unimaginable to go up. With the present and regular suppressing and erasing of our histories, there appeared nothing extra pressing than memorializing the Dozier Boys within the echelons of cinema.”
