Jackson State College sophomore Josiah Osula is making waves within the classical music scene. Lately, he earned two outstanding honors that underscore his distinctive expertise and dedication. The Dallas native was awarded the $1,500 James Miles Musical Innovation Grant from the Black Violin Basis, Inc., and triumphed within the statewide Music Lecturers Nationwide Affiliation competitors for string devices.
James Miles Musical Innovation Grant
The James Miles Musical Innovation Grant particularly goals to assist younger musicians of their pursuit of musical training by varied packages, together with non-public classes, summer time music camps, or faculty programs. This funding will allow Osula to proceed honing his craft this summer time.
“It’s an honor to obtain the award. The inspiration’s work is crucial in offering alternatives for younger Black violinists and Black musicians on the whole to succeed,” stated Osula, who is ready to be inducted into BVF’s fifth class of Black Violin Youth. His achievement is a part of BVF’s mission to empower youth musicians by increasing entry to high quality music packages that nurture creativity and innovation.
Osula first found his ardour for the violin at age 11, impressed by his older brother’s efficiency on the viola. His compelling journey from a curious baby to an achieved musician has been marked by onerous work and ambition. Whereas attending Plano East Excessive College in Texas, he efficiently utilized for the BVF grant, which supplied him with funds for violin classes.
MTNA Nationwide Competitors Victory
In November 2024, Osula showcased his abilities on the MTNA Nationwide Competitions and emerged because the winner within the senior division for string instrumentalists representing Mississippi. The MTNA competitions are famend throughout the nation for recognizing proficient younger artists whereas offering worthwhile instructional experiences for each college students and academics.
“I felt achieved,” Osula remarked. “I respect the MTNA for giving me the chance to compete. It was an incredible expertise, and I hope to do it once more.”
At JSU, Osula is not only an exemplary musician but in addition a pc engineering main with a minor in violin efficiency. LaTannia Ellerbe, D.M.A., assistant professor of strings at JSU, praised Osula’s contributions to the college, stating, “We’re fortunate to have Josiah part of Jackson State. He’s a wonderful educational scholar and an exquisite musician, as demonstrated by these achievements. He might’ve been anyplace, however we’re proud he selected us.”
