HBCU students install ring cameras for local neighborhoods

College students at Jackson State College are stepping as much as make a distinction locally that surrounds their HBCU. By way of a particular mission, they’re serving to senior residents really feel safer of their properties.

A Partnership with Function

The initiative was led by JSU’s Workplace of Group Engagement in partnership with the Pecan Tree Park Neighborhood Affiliation. Collectively, they put in 150 Ring video doorbells for residents in Jackson—fully freed from cost.

This effort was made attainable by a $50,000 grant from the Dwelling Depot Retool Your College Group Mission.

Supporting Senior Residents

The free doorbells had been put in for residents aged 65 and older who reside inside a 10-mile radius of Jackson State College. This mission aimed to enhance security and peace of thoughts for the aged group.

“We’re extraordinarily grateful to have secured the assets from Dwelling Depot to cater to the wants of our group,” stated Dr. Heather Denne, director of Group Engagement at JSU. “We hope that by getting access to the Ring cameras, our neighborhoods surrounding JSU will really feel extra pleasure about holding their properties pristine.”

Native resident Emmitt Powe, age 81, expressed his appreciation:

In 2024, Jackson State College grew to become the primary HBCU to obtain all three Retool Your College grants—the Campus Enchancment Grant, Innovation Lounge Grant and Group Mission Grant.  

The funding supported a number of initiatives, together with the latest Ring digital camera initiative, the transforming and furnishing of JSU’s Innovation Lounge within the Pupil Middle and the beautification and set up of the Pocket Park on the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) Civil Rights Schooling Middle, a part of the Margaret Walker Middle.

This mission is a shining instance of how college students can lead constructive change. Because of assist from Dwelling Depot and the area people, Jackson’s aged residents now have an additional layer of safety at their entrance doorways.
