After practically 40 years on the helm, Johnson C. Smith College head coach Stephen Joyner Sr. is retiring.
Johnson C. Smith introduced on Friday that Joyner is “transitioning” from his place as head males’s basketball coach after 36 years. He completed his profession with 600 wins, third in CIAA historical past behind Dave Robbins of Virginia Union and Clarence “Huge Home” Gaines.
“It was an ideal run right here at Smith,” Joyner mentioned in a short tweet launched by the college.
The Winston-Salem, NC native was a star guard at Atkins Excessive College earlier than coming to JCSU as a participant from 1969-1973.
After a stint as an assistant coach at Virginia Union College, Stephen Joyner obtained his first head teaching place with Smith’s ladies’s staff in 1980, constructing the Golden Bulls into one of many CIAA’s best packages.
